Antes era muy tímido. Antes iba al mercado los lunes.
The imperfect presents past states, habits or ongoing background without focusing on their beginning or end. Era muy tímido describes what I was like then. Iba los lunes describes a routine; fui ayer presents a particular trip. The difference is viewpoint, not simply long versus short duration.
